MAKE FILMS : 12

PICK N MIX FILMS TO CREATE EACH MONTH!

This 12 month course is packed with inspiration and encouragement to tell your stories through video. With twelve film ideas to spark your creativity and capture your everyday life into a memory film, each month.

For five years now I’ve been making at least a film a month and each one is such a gift, as it transports me back to those moments every time I watch. This course is designed to show you how to do the same…

First it starts with a spark…a film prompt, story idea or shooting & editing technique. Through my years of teaching, I’ve seen that many people like a nudge with what to create. So I’m going to give you twelve starting points to choose from… to inspire and get you shooting each month. You’ll pick whatever idea fits in with what you’re doing that month.

There’ll be encouragement and motivation to build a film making habit, by setting personal goals, so you can be proud when you achieve them. Creativity breeds creativity, the more we do, the more we want to do.

By the end of the course, you’ll have a bunch of amazing memory films, full of details and moments from your life. A wonderful achievement and chance to look back…

Please note – This course is designed for people who are already shooting & editing but would like some more ideas for films and stories they can tell. There won’t be tutorials for getting started to shoot and edit your films – these can be found in my other courses.

MAKE FILMS OF YOUR LIFE... PRESERVING YOUR MOMENTS INTO STORIES... TO ENJOY NOW & IN YEARS TO COME.

LET ME SHARE THE COURSE DETAILS…

PROJECTS – Twelve film project ideas and inspiration to encourage you to make your own film each month. Each film project will focus on a different prompt, story idea or shooting & editing technique, which will be the theme to create your film.

SHOOTING – There will be tips of how to approach shooting your film & examples of films I’ve created, to inspire. The prompt is there to spark your creativity and get you motivated. Feel free to use your preferred camera. I’ll be sharing examples of films made with a DSLR, compact camera and on the iPhone.

EDITING – You can edit in your preferred editing program. I will show you some examples of the film projects that have been edited in iMovie… the “Behind The Scenes” will share how I approached editing. Offering tips and tricks along the way.

GOALS – There will be the opportunity to create a film each month. However the number of film projects you complete is entirely up to you – you could make more or less. I will guide and encourage you along the way.

FILM SCHEDULE – You will choose which film idea to focus on each month, depending on what’s happening in your life at the time and where in the world you are. For example, creating your “Summer Film” will happen at different times of the year, depending on whether you’re in the Northern or Southern hemisphere.

MONTHLY TIMETABLE – At the beginning of the course I will share goals and schedules for each month, for those of you who like to work this way, but of course, you’re also welcome to work at your pace.

SUPPORT – There will be emails of encouragement to support you along the way and time for Q&As each month.

COMMUNITY – The community gathers in a closed Facebook group (this is optional), for discussions and live Q&As. Plus, participants can ask questions within the course site. You will be part of a community all with the same goal – to make films regularly . When we do things together, we become accountable to each other.

SHARING – Your finished film projects can be hosted on Vimeo or YouTube and shared either within the Facebook group or on Instagram via the course hashtag. (You’re welcome to keep your films private if you choose.)

This course will be a great opportunity to refine your editing skills through regular practice. I won’t be sharing step by step editing… there will a look at how I edited some of the film projects.

  • Access to the internet to view the course content – The course materials will be shared in my online learning site, with the ability to ask questions within there. Our community will be sharing their films via various online platforms.
  • OPTIONAL – A Facebook account. I’m not the biggest fan of FB, I haven’t hosted a group there for years. But I feel it offers a space for people to gather and the ability to share our films and for me to host live Q&As.
  • and lastly, but probably most importantly… a commitment to play, experiment, make films and have fun!

How is this course different from your other courses?
This course is based around inspiration and encouragement to continue making films. Some of the elements of shooting & editing and a few of the project ideas are found in my previous courses, but the materials have been developed specifically for this course, with a focus on regularly creating films of your life, telling different stories each month, over the period of a year.
I've taken a course with you before, so I'm not sure if this new course will benefit me.
This course will be great if you’ve taken one of my previous courses. You’ll already be familiar with my teaching and sharing style, and my main goal with the course is to follow on from what you’ve already learnt and encourage you to keep making your amazing films.
What if I’ve not taken a course with you before, can I still join in?
Yes, you’re welcome to join us, it’s not essential to have taken a course with me. I would suggest it helps if you’ve dabbled in shooting and editing video, as there won’t be step by step guides for “beginners” – this can be found in MAKE FILMS and Creating Time Capsule Films.
Is this course suitable for beginners?
I think you’re probably better off doing MAKE FILMS and Creating Time Capsule Films first, as that’s a step by step guide to getting started shooting and editing. Then once you’re creating your own films, you could consider taking this year long course. You can register at any time during 2018.
A whole year of creating films - I can't commit to making a film each month.
I feel one film a month is totally achievable. It’s really good to have a challenge and focus, to stay inspired. It’s amazing how you can really improve your skills by committing to creating a film regularly. However it’s entirely up to you, as to how many films you create. There’s no pressure to create a film every month. But the more involved you are, the better.
I only have an iPhone or mobile device; can I make films with this?
Absolutely! Simple and brilliant films can be created with these devices. They’re great to play around with. There are many apps to aid film making and it’s often the camera we have with us most of the time.
I’ve never shot video on my DSLR, will there be technical advice for this?
I won’t be sharing step by step guides for “beginners” so if you’re just starting out, I suggest checking out my courses – MAKE FILMS and Creating Time Capsule Films where there’s more support and shooting tips should you require it.
I have never edited a video before, will I be able to follow along?
I won’t be covering the basics of editing in this course, checking out – MAKE FILMS and Creating Time Capsule Films where there’s step by step guides to editing in iMovie on a computer and iPhone. This course is for people already familiar with editing and want to refine their skills by regularly editing a film together.
Is there a set time to be online in the course? Do I have to stick to deadlines for the projects?
Everyone works at different paces and in different timezones, so there is no set time to be in the online space to view the course materials. Most of the course content will be available from the start, and you will plan which films you will make throughout the year. There will be optional monthly deadlines to complete and share your film, as it can be good to have a time frame to work to, but it’s up to you when and if you complete your film. All this information will be shared once the course begins.
Can you offer feedback on my films? What kind of support will I have?
I try to watch as many films that my students make, but it’s not always possible if there’s a high volume of work to view. My role on the course is to encourage and inspire you with what films to make and remind you to get creating. During the course there will opportunities to submit films to be viewed by me and offer CC, and there will be support from the community who will (hopefully) interact with each other and share their films. I will be available to answer questions and offer advice at set times during the course. All this information will be shared once the course begins.
I’d like to take part, but I don’t want to share my films online?
You are absolutely able to take part and not share any of your work. You’re welcome to be part of the FB group to view other members work, to get inspired and to ask questions, with no pressure to share. It’s also possible to keep your films private from public view, but still share within the group so only the members can see.
I’m not sure I have enough time to create films?
Life is busy, with work and life commitments. I know this. But I know when I make pockets of time to do creative projects, the rewards are HUGE! A lot of these projects can be tackled in a small amount of time… how much time you put into the course is up to you. It’s always worth it!

If you have any further questions… pop me an email – xantheb@mac.com

Xanthe gave me tools to understand every aspect of the filmmaking process and (more importantly) inspiration to use in my own films.  Anyone can give you the technical skills needed to make a film, but with Xanthe you have a creative teacher and guide who empowers and inspires beyond just the how-to. – Deb

Make Films is one of the best ecourses I’ve ever done. It’s full of content and guidance, with plenty of opportunities for questions and feedback. I especially loved that we were able to share our movies and learn from each other. Thank you so much Xanthe! You’re an inspiration and amazing teacher! I can’t wait to sign up for one of your other courses. – Dörte

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for creating the Make Films course and sharing your gifts with all of us. I’ve loved film for as long as I can remember but I just didn’t think I had the time to dedicate to it that it needed. You not only helped me to see how I could find the time in my daily life but your filming guidance helped me to discover new storytelling ideas and ways of capturing my world through a medium I absolutely adore. Thank you especially for the reminder to play. It’s something I encourage others in my life to do but often forget when it comes to my own life. Playing has opened doors and windows inside of me. Thanks for sharing your passion with the world. You are a true inspiration! – Natasha
